The latest technology MRI-US Fusion(prostate biopsy under MRI and ultrasound guidance) allows for real-time integration of MRI and ultrasound results, producing a three-dimensional image of the prostate with clear visualization of suspicious areas from which samples are then taken. This makes the procedure significantly more informative and safe, allowing for much greater accuracy in detecting cancer and eliminating the risk of complications.
What are the advantages of the new technique?
As is known, the material for most oncological tests when suspecting prostate cancer consists of prostate tissue samples taken during biopsy. In the recent past, transrectal biopsy was performed under ultrasound guidance alone. Doctors could not see exactly where the cancerous tumour was located, and the procedure was performed almost blindly. Consequently, the results lacked accuracy: about 40% of patients (!) had to undergo this procedure again. Moreover, such a “blind” biopsy could lead to infections and other complications.
The new technology successfully addresses all these issues:
- Now, the biopsy is taken only from the area of the tumour, significantly increasing the effectiveness of the tests.
- The procedure is performed under visual control, and there is no need for repeat checks – this reduces the risks of performing a biopsy to zero.
