CAR-T: A Promising Treatment Method for Leukemia and Lymphoma

Leukemia is sometimes referred to as "blood cancer" and is the most common malignant disease. The symptoms of the disease can be aggressive and unresponsive to conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Fortunately, efforts to find new effective treatment methods continue.
One such method is called CAR-T and is available at the Ichilov clinic.
How CAR-T Treatment Works
CAR-T therapy for leukemia is an innovative technique that uses the patient's own immune cells to seek out and destroy cancer cells.
After taking a blood sample from the patient, T-lymphocytes (a type of immune cell) are isolated. The lymphocytes are then modified to activate the synthesis of proteins that recognize malignant cells (chimeric antigen receptors CAR). After multiplying in laboratory conditions, the individually cultivated cell culture is introduced to the patient. Prior to this, the patient undergoes a preparatory course of chemotherapy to help CAR-T cells accurately recognize and destroy tumour clones.
Who Can Receive CAR-T Treatment/Indications for Use

It is necessary to undergo at least 2 courses of leukemia treatment beforehand. The length of hospitalization for CAR-T therapy is determined individually but averages 2 weeks.
The best results with CAR-T can be achieved in young patients. Below are the results for achieving complete recovery/remission with CAR-T therapy: 85-90% in young children, approximately 80% in adolescents, and about 70% among all patient groups.
