Esophagoscopy with Biopsy in Israel

At the Top Ihilov Medical Center, a comprehensive examination program has been developed for patients with gastrointestinal tract pathologies. One of the most informative methods for examining the upper parts of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach) is esophagoscopy — an endoscopic procedure during which a special optical device (smooth tube) with a light source is inserted into the esophagus, allowing the doctor to thoroughly examine the mucous membrane of the organ to identify pathology.

In Israel, esophagoscopy with biopsy is one of the most common diagnostic procedures that allows for the detection of neoplasms in the esophagus even at early stages of disease development.

Indications for Esophagoscopy with Biopsy

Since esophageal cancer is a common oncological disease, esophagoscopy with biopsy should be performed when symptoms characteristic of this pathology appear, such as:

  • Dysphagia starting with solid, coarse food, then liquid;
  • Discomfort in the sternum;
  • Frequent belching, vomiting;
  • Hoarseness;
  • Progressive weight loss.

Preparation for Esophagoscopy

At the Top Ihilov clinic, every patient indicated for esophagoscopy with biopsy undergoes preparation that will make the procedure as effective and painless as possible:

  • X-ray examination of the pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach to identify anatomical features of the organs and possible contraindications to esophagoscopy;
  • At least 8 hours before the procedure, the patient stops eating;
  • If necessary (if a large amount of content has accumulated in the patient's esophagus), the esophagus is washed out using a probe.

Technique for Performing Diagnostic Esophagoscopy with Biopsy

At Top Ihilov, the most modern equipment is used for esophagoscopy, flexible esophagoscopes with a small diameter (the tube is thinner than a little finger), however, this endoscopic procedure may still cause the patient some discomfort. To maximize patient comfort before esophagoscopy and reduce discomfort during the procedure, a series of procedures are performed at the clinic:

  • Intravenous infusion;
  • Sedative premedication (the patient takes sedative medications that relieve anxiety and help them relax);
  • Local anesthesia of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and throat using a spray;
  • Intravenous administration of sedative medications during the procedure;

After the medication preparation, the doctor will insert the esophagoscope and begin examining the esophagus. If necessary (presence of ulcers on the mucous membrane of the esophagus, neoplasm, etc.), a biopsy will be performed using the esophagoscope — excision of a piece of tissue for histopathological examination.

After the esophagoscope is removed, the administration of sedative medications is stopped, and the patient quickly recovers.

The esophagoscopy procedure lasts approximately half an hour.

Recovery After Esophagoscopy

For 1-2 hours after the procedure, the patient is advised not to eat to avoid damaging the insensate mucous membrane of the mouth and throat.

Esophagoscopy with biopsy requires abstaining from hot food for 1 day. Sometimes, biopsy may be accompanied by increased bleeding of the esophageal mucosa — in this case, the patient is prescribed hemostatic medications (Vikasol, etc.).
