Carotid Angioplasty with Stenting in Israel

Carotid angioplasty (carotid stenting or stenting of the carotid artery) is a procedure that opens blocked arteries and is primarily used as a stroke prevention method. Narrowing of the lumens in the carotid arteries occurs due to atherosclerosis, affecting all arteries in the body. Carotid stenting involves the placement of a cylindrical wire structure (stent) in the artery to expand it. In many cases, this procedure is a better option compared to removing deposits in the arteries.

Carotid stenting requires precise and coordinated work from all medical staff, high qualifications of doctors, and the reliable operation of modern devices and equipment – all of which characterize the daily work of the neurosurgery and vascular surgery departments at Top Ichilov Clinic.

Preliminary Examinations at Top Ichilov Clinic

Since stenting of the carotid artery affects the entire circulatory system, including its impact on brain blood supply, specialists at Top Ichilov Clinic conduct a series of preliminary examinations before its application:

  • Ultrasound
  • CT
  • MRI

These examinations allow for complete visualization of the body's circulatory system and predict how carotid stenting will affect its functioning, as well as monitor this impact directly during the stenting procedure.

Stenting of the carotid artery is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require general anesthesia; the only incision made is a small cut in the groin for catheter insertion using local anesthesia.

After the procedure, the patient remains in the hospital for several hours, with most being discharged within a maximum of 48 hours.

Innovations in Cardiology — Live Streaming of Angioplasty

The technology of live video streaming, developed in Israel, allows the patient and their relatives to receive immediate information about the health status and the procedure being performed. This technology is also used for conducting medical consultations.

The initiator of the development is Prof. Ran Kornowski, head of the cardioplasty departments at a-Sharon and Beilinson hospitals. "This development is the first of its kind in the medical world. Instead of long and complicated explanations to the patient and family about what angioplasty is, I present a video recording on an iPad – simple, accurate, and professional," says Prof. Kornowski.

Through the application, the process of coronary angiography and angioplasty is recorded in the system's memory, including detailed indicators of myocardial functional capacity. The patient can accurately see the condition of the arteries before and after angioplasty, as well as receive medical instructions and explanations at any point in the hospital.

In addition to convenience for patients and legal aspects of healthcare, the application is used for information exchange between doctors of different specialties, with consultations being able to take place live, demonstrating necessary medical data – analyses and measurements, reports from specialists. In the near future, it will be possible to see the results of CT, MRI, and more.

Specialists at Ichilov Medical Center closely monitor the development of medical technologies and promptly implement effective elements into practice for the benefit of patients.
