Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Treatment Methods at Top Ihilov Medical Center

At the Top Ihilov Medical Center, patients with glossopharyngeal neuralgia receive comprehensive treatment, which includes conservative therapy and surgical treatment. Since the condition causes severe suffering, the first priority is to alleviate the pain syndrome. Medications prescribed include: analgesics, anticonvulsants, antispasmodics, local surface anesthesia, neuroleptics, and general strengthening therapy.

Good treatment results are observed with physiotherapy, reflex therapy, and manual therapy. If there is no progress, surgical treatment is indicated.

Treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia - conditionThe goal of the surgery is to relieve the nerve from the irritating factor: widening the jugular foramen or decompression of the nerve at the exit from the brainstem, among others. If the irritating cause is a spur-like process, it is resected. The surgical intervention is minimally invasive, with access to the surgical area provided by micro-incisions. Microsurgical instruments and endoscopic equipment are used. The minimally invasive nature of the surgery ensures the least impact on patients, allowing for quick recovery.

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Diagnostics at Top Ihilov Medical Center

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is characterized by manifestations of acute pain syndrome, with pulsating, exhausting pain that causes suffering to the patient. The pain syndrome radiates to the root of the tongue, tonsils, and face.

The causes of the disease may include: nerve compression, tumours near the nerve, infections, narrowing of the jugular foramen of the skull, altered stylohyoid ligament, enlargement of the spur-like process, and much more.

To differentiate the disease from similar pathologies, the patient undergoes special diagnostics:

  1. Orthopantomography. This is a radiological examination of the upper and lower jaws. A panoramic image allows for the identification of changes in the spur-like process, changes in the occipital bone, and defects in the stylohyoid ligament.
  2. CT.
  3. MRI.
  4. Electroneuromyography. A research method that determines nerve conductivity and impulse changes.

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
