One of the specializations of the Top Ihilov Medical Center is the treatment of oncological diseases. Highly qualified oncologists, neurosurgeons, and other specialists work here. The clinic is equipped with the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment, as well as its own scientific laboratory, where research is conducted and new treatment methods for various pathologies are developed. All this allows Top Ihilov to provide effective treatment for many oncological diseases, including schwannoma.
In recent decades, Israeli medicine has advanced significantly. This country has developed state-of-the-art methods for diagnosing and treating both common and relatively rare diseases, such as schwannoma. The established techniques are successfully applied worldwide. However, many people prefer to receive treatment specifically in Israel, so to speak, in the homeland of inventions.
Schwannoma is considered a relatively rare, yet occurring disease. It is a benign tumour that arises from Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. There is also a malignant form of schwannoma, which occurs much less frequently than the benign form.
The clinical manifestations of schwannoma depend on which specific nerve is involved in the tumour process. The schwannoma of the auditory nerve root is the most common, presenting with hearing loss on one side, and as it progresses, dysfunctions of the cerebellum and nerve trunks, as well as headaches as a sign of increased intracranial pressure, may develop. Additionally, the tumour process in Schwann cells can occur in other peripheral and cranial nerves. For instance, when nerves of the limbs are affected, paralysis, paresis, or sensory disturbances may arise. Small tumours may not manifest at all. In general, all schwannomas, except for the malignant form, are characterized by slow growth.
Treatment of Schwannoma in Israel
As with many benign tumours of nerve tissue, the treatment strategy for schwannoma is determined by many factors: the localization of the process, its depth, relationship to adjacent tissues, the size of the tumour, and the overall well-being of the patient.
Diagnosis of Schwannomas
Standard examination methods allow for the diagnosis of schwannoma:
- Physical and neurological examination, including the assessment of peripheral nerve functions using electromyography;
- Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging;
- Ultrasound for schwannomas located in soft tissues;
- Biopsy – the only method that allows for an accurate diagnosis.
