Modern Surgical Treatment Methods for Brain Tumours in Israel

The primary goal of surgical intervention in the treatment of tumours localized in the brain is, of course, the maximum complete removal of the neoplasm. The principle of surgical treatment for primary cancer, regardless of localization, is to excise as much of the pathologically altered tissue as possible to prevent further progression of the tumour and the spread of metastases.

Modern Surgical Treatment Methods for Brain Tumours in IsraelDuring surgical interventions on the brain, neurosurgeons from the Israeli Top Ihilov clinic use modern equipment and instruments, ensuring precise operation and minimal trauma to healthy brain tissue. There are several surgical treatment methods for brain tumours, and the choice of one depends on many factors considered by the clinic specialists.

Types of Brain Tumour Treatments at Top Ihilov

Stereotactic Surgery — a minimally invasive surgical intervention that allows for high precision targeting of the pathology for its destruction. Modern stereotaxy is performed using special computer programs that ensure maximum accuracy and effectiveness of the operation. The impact on healthy tissue is minimal.

Ultrasound Intervention — using special aspirators, the tumour is subjected to high-power ultrasound, resulting in the destruction of the neoplasm and removal of its remnants through the aspirator.

Shunting — restoration of physiological circulation of cerebrospinal fluid disrupted due to the neoplasm blocking the pathways of cerebrospinal fluid flow, leading to increased (stable) intracranial pressure and hydrocephalus. The installation of a shunt allows for the restoration of balance between the production and outflow of cerebrospinal fluid and alleviates symptoms of cerebrospinal hypertension (nausea, headache, etc.).

Craniotomy — a procedure during which the skull cap (the upper part) is removed. For this, the doctor drills many small holes in the skull wall, through which a wire saw is introduced to cut the bone gaps between the holes. After removing the skull cap, good visual access to the tumour is achieved, allowing for complete removal of the neoplasm. In cases where there is a high risk of damaging vital structures and complete removal of the tumour is impossible, the maximum possible volume of the neoplasm is excised, and additional treatment is conducted using chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Surgical methods of treating brain tumours can be standalone methods in the case of removing a benign tumour or part of a comprehensive treatment (primary procedure followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy). At the Top Ihilov Medical Center, the use of traditional metal scalpels is gradually giving way to modern techniques such as laser therapy, cryodestruction, ultrasound surgery, and photodynamic therapy.

The Most Modern and Progressive Methods for Treating Pathological Brain Tumours at Top Ihilov Clinic

The most progressive methods of surgical intervention for the removal of brain tumours are operations using computer-controlled navigation equipment and robotic laser-stereotactic systems. Additionally, cryo-devices of the latest generation are used for the destruction of brain tumours, fully controlling the degree of tissue freezing. Another innovative method is the removal of malignant gliomas of the brain using fluorescent microscopy.

The method of electrophysiological mapping of the cerebral cortex is extremely effective when localizing a neoplasm in the speech and motor area and in the area of the cerebellopontine angle. This method of surgical intervention is maximally gentle and allows for the preservation of important brain structures.

Laser Surgery — a very promising direction in neurosurgery. The high intensity of the laser beam allows not only for the finest tissue cuts but also for coagulating blood during dissection. Moreover, the laser is always sterile, and its use eliminates the risk of accidental spread of cancer cells to other organs and tissues.

Photodynamic Therapy — a new method undergoing clinical trials. Its essence is to increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to radiation of a specific wavelength by administering special drugs to the patient.
