Prostate Cancer - Treatment at Top Ichilov Clinic

According to "The Daily Mail", a unique alternative to surgical treatment for prostate cancer has emerged. Patients have already coined the name of this new technology – the "wonder needle".

An electrode with a diameter of only 2 mm, with a heated radiofrequency current at the tip, truly resembles a needle. This "needle" targets atypical cells of the prostate tumour and does not affect healthy tissues at all.

Scientists from the Lii Morfit Institute and specialists from the oncology center conducted clinical trials of the new technique on 60 volunteer patients. The results exceeded all expectations. Without surgical intervention, it was possible to destroy the neoplasms, while the functionality of the organ was not compromised. Patients tolerated the procedure well, experienced no pain, and no complications or side effects were noted during the post-treatment period; potency was preserved, and urination normalized.

All volunteers suffered from prostate cancer; they were young men with localized neoplasms in the early stages of the disease. Similar studies had previously been conducted on patients with kidney cancer.

If previously the most effective method for treating prostate cancer was prostatectomy, which is quite an extensive surgery often accompanied by bleeding and nerve damage, the emergence of the "wonder needle" has eliminated the acute need for surgical assistance. This pleases both patients and specialists.

Currently, treatment for malignant prostate lesions is performed using ultrasound. This method is also effective and proven, but compared to radiofrequency ablation, it falls short. All oncologists unanimously agree on this after reviewing the research results.

Radiofrequency ablation is performed under CT and MRI control and is completely safe. An electrode is introduced through the urethra to the site of the cancerous lesion, and a current of 20 watts destroys the cancerous tumour.

The potential of this method was also stated by Professor Raj Persad from the University of Bristol. In his opinion, radiofrequency ablation significantly surpasses ultrasound in energy potential. Since ultrasound can only destroy cells of the neoplasm in less deep layers of tissue, the presence of stones in the bladder can serve as an obstacle to the use of ultrasound. At the same time, bladder stones are not a contraindication for radiofrequency ablation.
