Modern Gum Cancer Treatment at the Top Ihilov Medical Center
Gum cancer is a malignant process that can affect not only the soft tissues of the gums but also spread to the bony tissue of the jaws and metastasize to other organs. Gum cancer is not always a primary disease; the oncological process can spread to the gums from the tongue or lips. Regardless of the cause of the pathology's development, it requires comprehensive urgent treatment.
Like any malignant pathology, gum cancer is treated comprehensively. The treatment program depends on the degree of damage and the extent of the process.
- Surgical treatment. The most effective method is the surgical removal of the tumour along with the surrounding tissues. If there is lymph node involvement, they are removed. In cases where the malignant process spreads to the cheek and floor of the mouth, radical excision of all affected areas is performed. During the intervention, plastic reconstruction of the defect is carried out. As a preventive measure against recurrence, radiotherapy is conducted after surgery.
- Radiation therapy. This method can be either standalone or part of a comprehensive treatment plan. In cases of severe cancer, preoperative irradiation of the neoplasm is indicated for more effective removal. Radiation therapy, along with chemotherapy, is administered to patients with inoperable types of cancer. The success of the treatment is not in doubt. The division of atypical cells ceases, the tumour decreases in size, and cancer symptoms disappear.
Gum Cancer: Multilevel Diagnostics at the Top Ihilov Medical Center
To obtain a complete picture of the location and localization of the malignant process, the patient must undergo a multilevel examination. The main diagnostic procedures include:
- fluorescent examination. The entire oral cavity is examined using the Discover technology. The examination lasts two to three minutes, resulting in the detection of the cancer process even at an early stage;
- X-ray examination of the facial bone structures;
- biopsy or scraping from the suspicious area of the mucosa. The sample is sent for examination to the pathology laboratory;
- MRI;
- CT;
- PET-CT. A mandatory examination to determine the process of metastasis and identify affected organs and systems;
- radioisotope examination;
- ultrasound of internal organs;
- punctured material collection from lymph nodes (if their involvement is suspected);
- if surgical intervention is planned, the patient undergoes a traditional examination of their general condition.
