Mediastinal Cancer Treatment in Israel

The differences in medical services between clinics in our country and hospitals in the post-Soviet space are evident. This includes the clinical experience of oncologists who possess a vast wealth of knowledge and progressive techniques. And completely new, innovative equipment in clinics, among which the leading position rightfully belongs to the Top Ihilov Medical Center. And an attractive pricing offer – our high-tech treatment for oncological pathologies of the sternum costs a third less than in EU centers and half as much as in North American clinics.

Moreover, our clinics do not require prepayment, and no visa is needed to enter the country. Additionally, the flight time is much shorter than, say, to the USA. Therefore, the continuous flow of medical tourists to Israel is quite justified.

Treatment Methods for Mediastinal Cancer in Israel

Treatment of mediastinal cancer in Israel is based on the principles of personalized medicine – each stage of diagnosis is assessed from the perspective of necessity in a specific case, and each therapy method is selected considering diagnostic criteria and personal (anatomical and physiological) parameters.

Treatment methods for mediastinal cancer in Israel encompass a wide range of techniques and approaches, including surgical interventions, radiation, and chemotherapy. The choice of method or combination of methods depends on which mediastinal organ (heart, thymus, pericardium, bronchi, lymph nodes, nerves, and major vessels) is affected by cancer and to what extent, the type of tumour by origin (neurogenic, lymphoid, metastatic), and other nuances clarified during diagnosis.

Mediastinal Cancer Treatment in Israel

  • The primary method for treating cancer of the mediastinal organs remains surgery. The goal of surgical intervention is to maximally remove tumour tissues while preserving the integrity of healthy organs located near the cancer focus. The most common method for operating on mediastinal tumours is thoracoscopy – a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure performed under video control. This operation is conducted without incisions and opening the sternum, through just a few punctures between the ribs. Mediastinoscopy (a mediastinoscope is inserted through an incision in the neck, slightly above the sternum) and thoracotomy (removal of the tumour with opening of the pleural cavity, performed openly by opening the chest) are also used.
  • Radiation therapy is performed using two methods – external and local. For external radiation, modern radiation units with navigation systems are used, allowing adaptation to respiratory movements and staying within the boundaries of the formation. Technologies with high-intensity focused beams are employed, allowing for treatment (for small tumours) in 1-2 sessions. The local method is brachytherapy, which involves inserting a radioactive capsule into the cancer focus. The capsule is inserted for a period corresponding to the half-life of the radioactive substance contained in the capsule. After the radiation period (several weeks), the capsule is removed. The goal of radiation is to completely remove the tumour or reduce its size before surgery.
  • Surgical intervention and radiation treatment are complemented by chemotherapy (as indicated). The use of modern cytostatics and cytotoxic drugs allows for the elimination of remaining cancer cells after surgery and radiation. The courses and their duration are determined individually by the treating oncologist, taking into account the localization of the process and the patient's response to treatment.

First Day of Diagnostics – Meeting at the Airport and Transfer to the Doctor's Appointment

The patient arrives in the country and goes directly from the airport, to save time, with an escort to the clinic for a consultation with an oncologist. By the way, the treating physician can be chosen at the stage of preliminary consultations. The oncologist reviews all documentation and prescribes clarifying diagnostic procedures.

Second Day – Directly Diagnosing Mediastinal Cancer in Israel

  • Mediastinoscopy.
  • Bronchoscopy.
  • X-ray.
  • MRI, CT, PET-CT, and PET-MRI (if metastases are suspected).
  • Biopsy and histology of the obtained biopsy.

Third Day – Final Day of Diagnostics and Start of Therapy

On this day, the oncologist, along with the chemotherapist and radiologist, analyzes the diagnostic data and selects the most appropriate therapy protocol for this patient.
